This article written by Jay Lucker EdD, CCC-A, SLP, FAA and Alex Doman was published in Issue 04 of Autism Science Digest.
Abstract:
Many children diagnosed with an autism spectrum disorder are described as having auditory hypersensitivities. This paper describes auditory hypersensitivities, the systems involved in hypersensitive hearing, methods for evaluating auditory hypersensitivity in children, and possible treatments. Auditory hypersensitivity involves the non-classical auditory system and is an emotional response to sound rather than an auditory response. Children described as being hypersensitive to sound have negative emotional reactions to sounds and situations in which the sounds are present. It is possible to desensitize these negative emotional reactions and reprogram the emotional memory system so that children are no longer frightened by sounds.

The major difference between behavior called autistic and behavior viewed as normal is the duration of the behavior. Look at a raindrop or contemplate the movement of your hands and you’d be seen as a curious, thoughtful person. But stare at a raindrop for minutes and more minutes and more minutes and you’d be viewed as having some sort of a “problem.” Now, going further, if you watched the movement your hands made with focused attention for hours, maybe even all day while excluding all other interpersonal interactions...well, then, you might be welcomed to the autism spectrum by some well-intended expert.

What does this mean? THERE'S A BIT OF AUTISM IN ALL OF US. But the difference between the tragedy of autism and the gift of autism is a JUDGMENT. And the difference between a flower and a weed is also a judgmentLot Blomhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01097349674247675828noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5040668207813003468.post-31724775298007671442010-04-13T17:57:00.000-07:002010-04-13T17:59:09.348-07:00Temple Grandin 2010, the movie<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 292px; height: 168px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_zE0G_Dea3Oc/S8USQ7iIeXI/AAAAAAAAAN8/xOjPG6BZN_o/s320/Schermafbeelding+2010-04-14+om+01.14.13.png" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5459790205324654962" />Fantastische film over het leven van een buitengewone beelddenker met autisme: Temple Grandin.
Opinion: Disorder Out of Chaos
By ROY RICHARD GRINKER
Considering autism is a condition that runs along a
spectrum, there is a scientific case for dropping the
misleading diagnosis of Asperger's.
Best quote: Narrow diagnostic categories do not help us understand the way a person will develop over time.

http://www.horseboythebook.com

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/femail/article-1145145/The-horse-saved-son-Little-Rowans-life-devastated-autism--hope-unlikely-inspiring-way.html
Zij is hoogleraar Doofblindheid in Groningen.

Flaporen
